A Path to Freedom Through Personalized Angstbehandling
Reclaiming Your Life
Anxiety is a deeply human experience, a natural response to perceived threats or stressors that, for many, can become chronic and overwhelming.
It’s a challenge that transcends geographical boundaries, impacting individuals whether they navigate the fast-paced life of a major city or the quieter rhythms of rural areas.
While the underlying feeling of unease is universal, the specific ways anxiety manifests can vary greatly, influencing our thoughts, emotions, and actions, often leading to a life that feels increasingly restricted.
My work as an angst coach focuses on helping individuals understand and transform their relationship with anxiety, guiding them toward a fuller, more meaningful existence.
Understanding Anxiety’s Diverse Manifestations
Anxiety can show up in countless ways, often subtly at first, before it begins to dictate our lives. It’s not merely a “feeling”; it’s an all-encompassing experience that can impact us physically, mentally, and behaviorally. For example, some may experience intense physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, or persistent muscle tension, feeling as though their body is constantly on high alert. Others might find themselves caught in a relentless cycle of “what if” thoughts, ruminating on worst-case scenarios and future uncertainties, leading to exhaustion and an inability to focus on the present. Furthermore, anxiety often leads to avoidance behaviors—people may shy away from social gatherings, new opportunities, or even daily tasks like work or errands, because these situations spark uncomfortable feelings.
These diverse manifestations, though originating from a natural stress response, can ultimately trap individuals in a pattern where attempts to avoid discomfort paradoxically intensify their struggle, shrinking their world and perpetuating the very anxiety they wish to escape.
This is where effective anxiety treatment becomes crucial.
My Philosophy: Changing Your Relationship with Anxiety
My approach to angstbehandling is built on a fundamental principle: the goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety, but to change your relationship with it. Anxiety is an inherent part of being human; it’s a messenger, signaling that something is important. Trying to fight or control it often makes it worse, consuming energy that could be spent living a rich, valued life.
I help people by first exploring what they’ve already tried to do to “get rid of” their anxiety. We systematically examine past strategies, allowing their own lived experience to reveal that battling their thoughts and feelings often hasn’t worked in the long run. This crucial realization fosters a willingness to try something new.
Instead of struggling with anxious thoughts and feelings, we learn to observe them with curiosity and acceptance. This involves techniques like “making room” for discomfort, treating anxiety like a “chess game in your head” where you are the board, not the pieces, or even “cradling your anxiety like a baby”. These are powerful defusion strategies that help you create a vital distance from your thoughts, recognizing them as temporary mental events rather than absolute truths.
A cornerstone of my work is helping individuals reconnect with their core values—what truly matters to them in life. When you clarify your values, they become a compass, providing a compelling reason to face discomfort. It’s about moving towards a meaningful life, rather than simply trying to escape anxiety.
Finally, we focus on committed action. This means taking purposeful steps aligned with your values, even when anxiety is present. It’s not about waiting for anxiety to disappear, but choosing to move forward, understanding that doing what matters often predicts a reduction in suffering. This behavioral activation helps build a life worth living, with anxiety simply coming “along for the ride”.
Erik’s Journey: From Workplace Anxiety to Empowered Living
Let me share the story of Erik, a 45-year-old manager who sought angstbehandling, angst treatment, for overwhelming workplace anxiety. Erik was caught in a cycle of perfectionism and self-doubt, constantly worrying about performance and deadlines. He would overthink every email, dread presentations, and often found himself paralyzed by the fear of making a mistake, leading to missed opportunities and increased stress. His anxiety manifested physically as persistent headaches and a tight knot in his stomach, making work feel like a constant battle.
When Erik first came to me, he’d tried countless strategies to control his anxiety – from working longer hours to meticulously planning every detail, believing that if he just “tried harder,” the anxiety would disappear. We began by exploring how these attempts, despite his best intentions, were actually fueling his distress. He realized his “fight” against anxiety was a losing battle, consuming his energy and restricting his life both professionally and personally.
I introduced Erik to the power of observation and acceptance. We practiced exercises where he would simply notice his anxious thoughts and physical sensations without judgment, rather than fighting them. He learned to “make room” for the discomfort, understanding it as a temporary experience, not a reflection of his worth. I guided him to see his critical thoughts about performance not as absolute truths, but as “sticky thoughts” from his “Mr. Anxiety”.
Next, we identified what truly mattered to Erik beyond his work-related fears. He valued being a reliable team member, a present father, and a creative individual. These values became his motivation. Even though anxiety told him he “couldn’t”, he started taking small, committed actions. For example, he agreed to lead a small team discussion, a task he’d previously avoided, doing it not to “get rid of” anxiety, but because it aligned with his value of being a contributing leader.
Over time, Erik learned to bring mindfulness and self-compassion to his anxious moments. He stopped blaming himself for feeling anxious and began to treat his inner struggles with kindness. The transformation wasn’t that his anxiety vanished, but that its grip on his life loosened dramatically. He still felt anxiety occasionally, especially before big projects, but he no longer let it dictate his actions. He was able to move forward, attend social work events, initiate creative projects, and be more present with his family, all while acknowledging the presence of anxiety. Erik learned that the path to a fulfilling life wasn’t through the eradication of anxiety, but through a willingness to carry it, choosing to act in alignment with his values regardless of its presence.
